Top Australian Saltwater Fly Fishing Destinations

If you’re looking for some great saltwater fly fishing, you will definitely want to put Australia on the top of your list of destinations. There is no shortage of hot spots to cast a fly line get a fly wet.

Western Australia Saltwater Fly Fishing

Smack dab in the middle of the western coast of Australia is Shark Bay Coast. These warm waters are ideal for some great fly fishing for Tarpon and Giant Trevally, both of which are hard hitting fish and good fighters.

Also in the west is Kimberly. In Kimberly you will enjoy some good fly fishing for Threadfin Salmon near the beaches and coastline.

A little farther north in Western Australia is Exmouth and Pilbara. Mangrove Jack is the fly fishing thrill in Exmouth, as well as Permit. Pilbara is a great spot to go fly fishing for Queenfish.

Northern Territory Saltwater Fly Fishing

Much of the fly fishing action in Australia happens here, particularly in the warmer months. There are a little of rivers and estuaries full of species that make for good angling. Good fly fishing destinations in the NT include the western shore of the Gulf of Carpentaria. Saltwater fly fishing species here include Mangrove Jack, Barramundi, Permit, Threadfin Salmon and Queenfish.

Queensland

Queensland covers a big territory and has a lot of good saltwater fly fishing area. Starting at the north you have the eastern shore of the Gulf of Carpentaria, which holds Barramundi, Giant Trevally, Mangrove Jack, and Permit. Hinchinbrook Island is a good place for Permit fishing. Also, there is Cairnes to the north of there, which is a great place to go if you want some heavy fly tackle fishing for Marlin. Also food for Marlin is the Great Barrier Reef off the north east coast of Queensland. Even if you don’t want to go fishing here, you should visit. It is the world’s largest coral reef and one of the most beautiful places on Earth.

New South Wales (NSW)

On the south eastern border of Queensland and the north eastern border of New South Wales you can find some good fly fishing for Giant Trevally, and the northern part of NWS also holds Tarpon. Down further south in Sydney, you might be tempted to head out to deeper water for Black Marlin.
